ESG by ESG – A Minimalist Funk and Proto-House Excursion

Soak up the funky, lo-fi, post punk vibes from south Bronx’s finest – ESG. The band originally consisted of the Scroggins sisters, Renee (vocals), Valerie (drums), Deborah (bass) and Marie (congas, vocals) and friend Tito Libran (congas, vocals). This ep, released on 99 Records in 1981 was part produced by Factory Records legend Martin Hannett. The track “Moody” gained favour with House Djs on both sides of the Atlantic, with it’s stripped down, minimalist take on funk, while “UFO” has been sampled by has been sampled by such hip-hop greats as Big Daddy Kane, J Dilla, Public Enemy and Notorious B.I.G. to name but a few.
